Immigrate Through Express Entry
Canada is a country that prospers from diversity and promotes multiculturalism. This diversity is made up of immigrants from all over the world. Throughout the past few years, immigration applications have continued to increase, and many people are trying to apply for express entry immigration. Firstly, what is express entry immigration? Express entry immigration is an immigration geared towards skilled workers. Just as the name implies, skilled workers are people with higher education as well as extensive work experience in a field that is considered high in demand. To check if you are considered a skilled worker, you must find your NOC code. NOC stands for National Occupational Classification and you can find your NOC code here
Jobs with skill type zero, A, and B are considered skilled workers. In addition to being a skilled worker, you also need to look at the following:
- Language proficiency in either English or French
- Level of education obtained
- Work experience inside/outside of Canada
- Total comprehensive ranking system (CRS) points
The official languages of Canada are English and French. Therefore, having language proficiency in either English or French is a mandatory requirement for immigration. If you measured your English proficiency with IELTS, you must have a score of 8.0 in listening and a minimum of 7.0 in writing, speaking, and reading.

Now, before I move on to talk about education, I will explain the importance of CRS points. In addition to being a skilled worker with English proficiency, Immigration officers will also look at your CRS points to assess your application and give you a rank amongst other applicants. If you go to this link and look at “CRS score of lowest ranked candidate” you will find a number which is 467 as of April 9th, 2020. What this tells you is that in order to be invited for express entry immigration, you must have a minimum CRS score of 467. Also, keep in mind that this minimum score changes on a regular basis, so it is important to check the CIC website for latest information.
So, how can you get CRS points? This brings us back to the other criteria listed above which is education and work experience. The higher level of education you have, the higher your CRS points will be. However, if your education was obtained outside of Canada, you need to get an Educational credential assessment (ECA). This assessment will look at your program, credits obtained, and GPA to see if your degree/diploma/etc. can be recognized by Canada’s board of education. In order to increase their CRS points, many potential express entry applicants come to Canada as an international student to obtain a 1 or 2-year graduate certificate. Having gained education from a Canadian post-secondary institution will also offer you more CRS points. The second important factor to getting more points is work experience. Work experience gained inside Canada will be rated higher than work experience gained outside of Canada. However, if you are already a skilled worker in your home country and you have a good ECA result, you may have enough CRS points to be invited for express entry. In order to calculate your CRS points, you can use an online CRS calculator offered by the Government of Canada:
After you answer all the questions, the final page will show you a breakdown of CRS points by section followed by a final total score. Once you have this number, you can compare it to the current minimum CRS point required. Based on this, you will be able to assess your eligibility and plan to see what you need to do to increase your points, if needed.
